On the 14th of December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1st as the International Day of Older Persons. The theme for 2022 is “Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World.” This theme is one to truly celebrate, not just for a day, but each day as we “all age together”. The rapid rate at which life changes in the world and our acute awareness of those occurrences, can be difficult to absorb. Each day I have to filter out the “noise” to an acceptable level. One thing is certain, I have found resilience is an attribute that is tested and strengthened over time. My brother constantly reminds me each hurdle provides another opportunity to see past the immediate to the long game.
On October 24th, the Juanita C. Grant Foundation is launching our 50+ REFRESH Back to Work Bootcamp. The Bootcamp culminates our longstanding partnership with Employ Prince George’s Jobs Largo. The 7-week work readiness Bootcamp will provide Prince George’s County older adult residents with skills to tap into their resiliency and thrive in today’s hybrid work culture. The 50+ REFRESH Back to Work Bootcamp will update your computer skills, establish a compelling social media work profile, and instill a customer service approach to problem-solving. The Bootcamp will also introduce skills needed for six in-demand industry career tracks - business, social services, healthcare, recreation, retail, and tourism and hospitality. The Bootcamp classes are small to allow individual attention as each Bootcamp member works towards his or her individual career plan.
Resilience comes in many shapes and is sometimes missed by those looking from the outside. Each victory in overcoming the left hooks of life is worth celebrating the strength and perseverance it took to move forward.
